Caregiver & Founder, GivetoCare.org
Abby Maslin is the founder of GivetoCare.org and a blogger for the website Brainline.org. Her caregiving journey began in August 2012 when her husband, TC, was robbed and assaulted walking home in their Washington, D.C. neighborhood. As a result, TC sustained a severe traumatic brain injury and Abby immediately stepped into the role of full-time caregiver.
Four years later, TC has made incredible strides in his recovery and Abby continues to advocate for caregivers nationwide. During her own journey she experienced many of the consequences facing today’s caregivers: emotional burnout, health problems, and isolation. The road to self-care did not come easily, but she credits practices such as yoga, writing, and exercising as essential pieces in helping to cope and work toward creating a new normal for her family.
Now she is on a mission to help others do the same. Through advocacy for self-care, she hopes to give fellow caregivers opportunities to recharge and replenish themselves through small but meaningful gifts. Abby firmly believes that sustainable longterm caregiving is only possible when caregivers place the oxygen mask on their own faces first.
Through GiveToCare.org, she hopes to build a community committed to caring for the people who care hardest.
